Ravens sign Ihedigbo, release Gorrer

The Ravens signed S James Ihedigbo on Sunday, and also inked former Steelers QB Dennis Dixon to the practice squad. To make room for Ihedigbo, Baltimore released CB Danny Gorrer.

A day after the Ravens added depth to the safety position and special teams by signing James Ihedigbo on Sunday, the organization released cornerback Danny Gorrer.
< Gorrer saw game action in 11 games in 2011, tallying five tackles and four pass deflections. It was a bit of a surprise to see Gorrer go after having a solid preseason with Baltimore.

But the move was made to ensure safety depth for the upcoming season.

"24 hrs til I find out where my new home will be!!!! Hurt but thankful, never get comfortable cause we never no in this business!!!!" Gorrer tweeted.

Gorrer initially made the 53-man roster on Friday for the second season in a row. But being the fifth corner on the roster wasn't enough for him to stick around for the opener. Asa Jackson and Chykie Brown's roles on special teams didn't help Gorrer's case either.

Safety Bernard Pollard said it was tough to see Gorrer go.

"It's tough, Danny's my boy," Pollard said. "But this is the business side of it. This is the side where if you think things are going well, things can change. We can't control it. One thing I've always been told since I got in this league is you can control the controllables. This one is out of our hands. We know it, we understand it and we have to be ready that if we do get that phone call, that we have to be ready to bounce back."

Ihedigbo last played with the New England Patriots in 2011, where he tallied 69 total tackles. He started in 12 games due to injuries and personnel moves made by the Patriots.

Ihedigbo and Sean Considine are now the backup safeties on the roster, with rookie Christian Thompson still learning the ropes. Corey Graham is a versatile defensive back, who can play corner as well as safety.

Ihedigbo was signed to bolster Baltimore's special teams unit, which gave up three return touchdowns in 2011. He went undrafted in 2007 and spent four years in the New York Jets' organization before signing with New England. The Patriots released him this past Friday.

Ihedigbo confirmed signing with Baltimore on his personal Twitter page.

"Fresh start...God is good..honored to be a Baltimore Raven!!!!" Ihedigbo tweeted.

Baltimore also finished putting together its practice squad on Sunday, signing former Steelers quarterback Dennis Dixon. Dixon, selected in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL draft, participated in four career games with Pittsburgh, including a start against Baltimore in a 20-17 overtime loss in 2009.

Dixon joins RB Anthony Allen, OL Antoine McClain, OL Jack Cornell, S Omar Brown, S Anthony Levine, OLB Adrian Hamilto and LB Josh Bynes on the practice squad.
