Running back Jamal Lewis was held out of contact drills as he continues to recover from a strained hip flexor, but participated in the majority of practice. “It’s just precautionary until we get him into a full rhythm,” Billick said. “We want to make sure we’re being smart.”

Lewis, linebacker Ray Lewis and defensive end Trevor Pryce were given the afternoon off.

TRAINING ROOM: Trainer Bill Tessendorf’s workload is increasing.

Several players were held out of practice, including: cornerback Samari Rolle (sprained knee), wide receivers Mark Clayton (strained hamstring) and Demetrius Williams (sprained hamstring), cornerback David Pittman (strained hamstring), tight end Bobby Blizzard (back) and wide receiver Clarence Moore (hernia), who remains on the physically unable to perform list.

The injuries to Rolle, Clayton and Williams aren’t regarded as serious.

“I’m just getting old,” Rolle said.

Billick stressed that he didn’t think Rolle was hurt badly.

“I think it’s minimal,” he said. “It’s always easy for me to say because it’s not my knee. We’ve been fairly fortunate – knock on wood – to not have any major injuries."

Running back Cory Ross (strained hamstring) returned to practice.

NEW WIDEOUT ADDED: The Ravens signed free agent wide receiver Matt Cherry (Akron) and might add another receiver to bolster their camp depth. Cherry has prior stints with the Carolina Panthers and Cincinnati Bengals, although no statistics.

QUICK HITS: Quarterback Steve McNair was more accurate and decisive. … The team is expecting leadership qualities out of veteran runner Mike Anderson, a former Marine. “He’s a classy guy,” Billick said. “You add that to your team and you’re a better team. What he’s able to pass on to the young guys is huge.” … Cornerback Corey Ivy worked with the starters along with Darling. … Undrafted rookie Ronnie Prude operated as the nickel back and appears to be advancing faster than draft picks Pittman and Derrick Martin.
