Ravens notebook - J.Lewis could miss next game

Running back Jamal Lewis sounds as if he's inclined to make his playing debut Sept. 11 in the season opener against the Indianapolis Colts, which means he could miss the entire preseason.

The former Pro Bowl runner is uncertain if he’ll play in Thursday's preseason finale against the Washington Redskins, calling it a 50-50 proposition.

“I’m anxious to get out there Sept. 11. That’s my main goal and that’s when I know I will be ready to go,” said Lewis, who underwent right ankle surgery in February. “I do want to take some hits and some contact before that. If I’m not ready to go, I’m not ready to go. If I don’t feel comfortable going out there, I would rather just wait for the first game.”

Ravens coach Brian Billick expressed hope that he might be able to use Lewis, who returned to practice Monday, on a limited basis this week.

Lewis contradicted what he said last week when he indicated it was his left foot, not his right foot that was bothering him.

“It wasn’t the other foot, it was the same foot, same ankle,” Lewis said. “They say it's a bone spur. It’s somewhat like a bone spur. It’s from scar tissue breaking up and the ankle being tight.”

INTERESTED IN SIMON: The Ravens are keeping an eye on former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Corey Simon, whom they nearly obtained via trade earlier this year.

The deal wasn't struck because general manager Ozzie Newsome and Simon’s agent, Roosevelt Barnes, were millions of dollars apart in contract talks. The Eagles rescinded the franchise tag on Simon, making him an unrestricted free agent.

It’s believed the Ravens have yet to contact his representatives.

"There will certainly be economic questions to be had and Ozzie and his group will look at it,” Billick said. “It could get a little pricey. The fact that it’s late will press a lot of teams to make some quick decisions and that’s usually not the best environment to make those types of decisions.”

TRAINING ROOM: Linebacker Peter Boulware is poised to play in his first game since December of 2003 after missing all of last season with knee and toe injuries. He could play six to eight snaps as a situational pass rusher.

“Hopefully, I’ll be ready to go,” said Boulware, who was selling cars at his Florida dealership prior to rejoining the Ravens. “I feel pretty good, but I’ve got some rust. I think I will play just enough to get my feet wet and get ready for the Colts."

Cornerback Samari Rolle (knee sprain) didn’t practice and is unlikely to play against the Redskins.

“If I don’t feel 100 percent, I’m not going out there,” Rolle said. "I don’t gain anything by playing.”

Nickel back back Dale Carter (back spasms) might play Thursday.

WAITING TO HEAR: Rolle has yet to learn from the NFL if he will be suspended for the Colts game following his plea bargain for a domestic violence charge involving his wife. League officials said that Rolle's case is still being reviewed.

“It’s hard to wait,” Rolle said. “I want to find out because it’s getting closer and that’s a big game.”
