Ravens' Green chasing down quarterbacks

OWINGS MILLS – Roderick Green follows coaches' orders to a tee. Specifically, the Baltimore Ravens’ second-year defensive end chases down the quarterback or anything else that moves.

In his best performance since being drafted in the fifth round last year out of Central Missouri, Green was credited with a team-high six tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble in a 20-14 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles last week.

“I think everybody’s excited about Rod,” defensive coordinator Rex Ryan said. “He has great potential to be an outstanding pass rusher in this league.”

One of Green's sacks came at the expense of All-Pro quarterback Donovan McNabb, a 5-yard loss that halted the Eagles on 3rd-and-9. Tonight at the Superdome against the New Orleans Saints, Green will be pursuing yet another elusive quarterback: Aaron Brooks.

“That was exciting to bring down McNabb,” said Green, who redirected his rush and dragged the powerful quarterback to the ground. “That was definitely pretty cool.”

The 6-foot-2, 245-pound Green is beginning to establish a niche as a situational pass rusher.

Ryan envisions a potential substitution rush package featuring Terrell Suggs, Peter Boulware and Green rushing along the line. With his upper body bulk and quick first step, Green could even play tackle despite his lack of ideal size with Suggs and Boulware rushing off the edge.

“I can get down there and push and shove,” Green said. “I just want to play and I don’t mind rolling my sleeves up and getting dirty.”
