The Ravens agreed to a one-year contract with tight end Visanthe Shiancoe on Sunday.

With Dennis Pitta sidelined indefinitely with a dislocated and fractured hip, the Ravens signed veteran tight end Visanthe Shiancoe to a one-year contract.

Shiancoe was assigned the No. 81 jersey and joined his teammates at practice after signing his contract.

Though a seasoned veteran, Shiancoe's spot on the 53-man roster won't be guaranteed. He'll still have to compete with Billy Bajema and rookie Matt Furstenburg for a spot, unless the Ravens want to keep four tight ends on the roster -- though that assumes the Ravens will place Pitta on either season-ending injured reserve or IR-designated to return.

For his career, Shiancoe has caught 243 passes for 2,677 yards and 27 touchdowns with the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings. He had a brief stint with the Patriots in 2012 but didn't catch any passes.

The Giants selected Shiancoe in the third round of the 2003 draft out of Morgan State.
