Dennis Pitta likely out for season

Dennis Pitta dislocated his hip in Saturday's practice and will be out for at least the season-opener against Denver.

Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta will likely miss the 2013 season after sustaining a dislocated and fractured hip during practice Saturday.

Pitta collided with safety James Ihedigbo on a jump ball pass in the end zone, fell and was unable to get up. The fourth-year tight end had to be carted off the field.

Coach John Harbaugh, who did not have a media obligation on Saturday, briefly spoke to the media about Pitta's injury.

"Dennis has a dislocated hip," Harbaugh said. "So, we'l have to take a look at that and see exactly what it is. It's a situation that's a serious injury. He is going to be out for a while. He will not be in the Denver game. We will just have to play it from there to see long it goes. I don't really have the numbers of the weeks right now, but we will just have to see, and we will know more tomorrow."

Pitta was taken to a local hospital where he had surgery. The Ravens will have a decision on either placing him on season-ending injured reserve or injured reserve-designated to return.

Losing Pitta is a big blow to an offense that traded Anquan Boldin to San Francisco this offseason. Now, two of quarterback Joe Flacco's favorite targets from 2012 will not be available to open the 2013 season.

With Pitta sidelined, Ed Dickson becomes Baltimore's top tight end on the depth chart. Behind Dickson is Billy Bajema and undrafted rookie Matt Furstenburg.

In 2012, Pitta had 61 catches for 669 yards and seven touchdowns.
