Ravens talking deal with Daryl Smith
The Ravens are in ongoing talks with former Jacksonville Jaguars inside linebacker Daryl Smith, RavensInsider.com learned late Tuesday night from multiple sources.
If a contract is worked out between both parties, it's not expected to be a high value. Smith has interest in joining a winning organization, making the Ravens appealing for him.
Smith, who played college football at Georgia Tech, was drafted by Jacksonville in the second round with the 39th overall pick in the 2004 NFL draft. In nine seasons with Jacksonville, Smith has totaled 678 tackles (537 solo), 21.5 sacks, 36 pass breakups, six interceptions and nine forced fumbles.
The Ravens' lone need that remains on defense is at inside linebacker. Ray Lewis retired after the Super Bowl and Rolando McClain retired shortly after signing a minor deal. Jameel McClain is still rehabbing from a spinal cord contusion sustained during last season's game against Washington, and has been unable to practice fully during offseason workouts.
Albert McClellan is dealing with an undisclosed injury and rookie Arthur Brown recently had sports hernia surgery. This has left Josh Bynes as the only inside linebacker with game experience able to practice during each day of organized team activities.
