Ravens hire assistant special teams coach Hewitt, promote Weiss

The Baltimore Ravens made it official, announcing the recent hire of former Rutgers running backs coach Chris Hewitt as their new assistant special teams coach.

They also promoted Matt Weiss to defensive assistant from his previous job as the assistant to coach John Harbaugh.

Hewitt has ties to Harbaugh and special teams coordinator Jerry Rosburg from his time as an All-Conference USA defensive back at the University of Cincinnati when they were on the Bearcats coaching staff.

Hewitt, 37, coached at Rutgers for the past eight years, including a stint as the cornerbacks coach for future New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans cornerbacks Devin McCourty and Jason McCourty. He was also the Scarlet Knights' director of speed and skill development for three seasons.

"I'm really excited about being in the NFL," said Hewitt, a former colleague of Ravens offensive assistant Craig Ver Steeg at Rutgers where Ver Steeg coached Ravens Pro Bowl running back Ray Rice. "It's a great opportunity to be working with coach Harbaugh. He is someone I've known for a long time. I look forward to helping this team and learning more, especially with this being the NFL and the highest level of coaching." With the New Orleans Saints for three seasons, Hewitt recorded 29 tackles on defense with three sacks and one forced fumble while also lining up on most of the special teams units. Hewitt participated in the Ravens' training camps twice as part of the NFL minority coaching fellowship program and also participated in the program with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Cleveland Browns. Hewitt was also a strength coach at Notre Dame.

"We believe Chris' maturity, work ethic and overall skill set will enhance our special teams units," Rosburg said. "He brings experience as a coach in a highly-competitive college program and also as a NFL player. Chris is very familiar with our organization, and his core values align well with those of our coaching staff." Weiss was Harbaugh's assistant for the past three years, also working on defensive quality control where he concentrated on scouting reports and the Ravens' scout teams in practice.

A former Vanderbilt punter, Weiss coached at Stanford as a defensive and special teams assistant under Jim Harbaugh, John Harbaugh's brother. He was previously a graduate assistant for three seasons for the Cardinal.
